my baby boy – Alexzander’s Story

Alexzander was born on Sept 15th, 2014 my birthday as well. Up until delivery all we knew was we were having a healthy baby boy. Alex was taken by c-section @ 312am. He was beautiful and perfect. They immediately took him over to the table and cleaned him up.

The nurses showed his father and his father whispered in my ear that alex hands and feet were deformed. I was so out of it from the epidural that I passed out.

Harris’ heroes

I had never heard of ABS before. I never had the need to know what it was, how it happened and why until we had our son, Harris. Harris was born on 30th May 2014, exactly 3 weeks early, at 2.15am after 6 hours of active labour. My fiancé, James and I had agreed that we didn’t want to know the sex of the baby as we wanted it to be a surprise but deep down we both craved a little boy. So when Harris was delivered and the midwife said “it’s a boy”

Amelia’s Story

I had never heard of ABS until I read the article on CNN website. My daughter Amelia “Millie” was born on July 8th, 2013. The doctor came over to us and told us that on her left hand she had 2 fingers that were smaller and on her left foot 3 toes that were smaller. They were also concerned because she had a bald spot on her head. The pediatrician said everything seemed normal with our daughter otherwise.

Fast forward to 2 months later at her 2 month check-up.

Victoria’s ABS Story

I found out about my daughter Victoria’s condition while still pregnant during a routine sonogram at my local hospital. The findings were submitted to a hospital that specializes with the kind of deformities they had found. I got a call from the “other” hospital, explaining that they had found they couldn’t detect her left leg and she had hand malformations……of course, I panicked. I had no idea what was wrong and at that point they hadn’t even explained what it could have been from.

Hannah’s Hand Saved Her Life

Without warning she got up, mumbled something indiscernible under her breath and left the room without so much as turning on the lights. She had been stoic throughout the process. The absolute opposite of the nurse who usually took our sonograms I figured this nurse needed to use the restroom. Nothing to fret. I checked the clock and allowed myself to doze as I lay in the dimly lit room.

The sonogram nurse returned to the dark room about 15-minutes later with a short woman in tow.

My Son Ethan’s ABS Story

Ethan was born 3 weeks late and I had to be induced. I gave birth on the 18th of February 2011 at 7:00am at Baines avenue clinic in Harare. I didn’t even notice until they had cleaned him up that he had a missing left foot, with just the heel present. At first I was shocked them dismayed and I was asking God what I had done wrong.

Visiting time was at 10:00 am and my husband and mother-in-law came to see me.

Ramon’s World

I gave birth to Ramon Harris at 6 1/2 months who was
Diagnosed with ABS. It was hard as a mother to except this especially when you
questioned yourself what did you do wrong. He was born with a small left hand
that didn’t fully develop. At six months his left hand was amputated.

It took a while for me to come to realization that this is
how he will be for the rest of his life.

Twin Love

It’s not about what you planned,
Or what you would have liked…
It’s about what you have been given,
And what you choose to do with it…

Dec 2012, I hesitated in announcing the birth of our twin girls. I was in shock about Trinity’s amniotic banding. Actually, I was completely broken. It was the first time in my life that I let the darkness take me down, way way down. I truly didn’t think I would be ok.

My miracle child

Last year in 2013 August, I gave birth to the most beautiful child ever, my son. When the doctors took him and he was being cleaned, I saw two nurses chatting. their faces were serious, but because I was still being stitched I could not tell what was going on. To my surprise later when my husband asked me about my son’s toes…..Doctor came later to tell me that my son had no toes on his right foot. I cried not knowing how to deal with this.

Urijah’s Little Hand

I gave birth to my son Urijah on November 16, 2012. We had no idea that he was going to be born with ABS. We never even heard of it before this day.  Urijah is missing all four fingers on his left hand. He has just little numbs where his fingers should be.

When I found out I had no idea how to feel. I felt as if I had done something wrong during my pregnancy.  I wasn’t sure how difficult his life would be with just 6 fingers.
